Aye, it’s been ages but yes indeed here it is, some musical output from TekMonki!!!!

I’ve had a bit of a creative slump the past year or so, chalk it up to being busy at work and life I guess. After making loop after loop after loop and not really having them go anywhere I decided maybe I’d look into this whole “DJ” thing so I could still do something musically creative while I bided my time. Once upon a time I used to make mix tapes for friends (and myself) to play in the car or wherever suited. Beyond that though, I figured that maybe I’d learn something new by attacking the “making music” thing from a different angle than I normally did. I started out with it last summer and then kinda lost inspiration (work/life again), then a muse/angel must’ve come along, because it all just kinda fell together. Gotta love the muse. The odd bit is that when all was said and done, it kinda accidentally turned into my favorite songs of 2005, in nearly chronological order no less.

It was definitely a learning process (Lesson 1: Don’t be too quick to slag off DJs). Getting things to flow and sit right seem easy in your head, but in practice . . . not so much. Then again, it’s not your typical “house” or “breaks” set either. I started picking out tracks that I liked at random, stuff that I could listen to over and over, and not really having a “DJ” background I didn’t really limit myself to one genre or tempo. I guess maybe that made things harder in a way, but I have fairly eclectic tastes so picking out “all house” or all . . well any sub-genre. . .wasn’t gonna happen, but I think it flows quite well in the end. Starts off slow (80ish BPM) and goes all the way up to frenetic (140 BPM) and back down again.
